Freshers Week

University life offers exhilaration round the year but nothing beats the thrill of participating in Freshers’ week. It’s a fun filled week full of parties and fun chaos. Freshers week is an exciting time for the students as they get to meet new people, attend dinners, join clubs and get to know the ways of the university. Students unions organise tons of events to keep the new students occupied and happy so that the switch from living with parents to living away is easily forgotten!

For several days there is a whirlwind of events. International food nights, a freshers ball, city tours and fairs are organized to familiarise the students with their new surroundings. International students find it even tougher due to the language barriers and so freshers week aims to build a bridge between the language barriers and offer  a platform for people to make new friends. Freshers’ week with its plethora of activities helps the students overcome these initial problems.

The first night of the freshers week is organized by the Union to help the Halls residents to get to know their housemates. It is usually a loud, crowded and boisterous party and isn’t limited to freshers only. Older students living outside the campus also join in to welcome the new students. It’s a great way to unwind and meet new people and share a few laughs. Most of the people you meet here will be soon forgotten but you may be lucky enough to forge a few lasting friendships.

Another highlight of the freshers week is the freshers fair. If you have a passion for sports or like reading poetry then this is the time to look for societies and clubs that offer you similar activities. Joining a club has many advantages, you get to meet people with similar tastes and it’s a good change from the regular University routine. Fairs also have poster stalls which are popular among new students looking to decorate their empty walls. This is also a good time to look for discount cards/schemes from the service companies who are present at the fair.

Though cumbersome, you will also need to complete the formalities and get all your documents checked. Ensure that you get ready for your university life by registering with your department, getting your student ID and attending talks given by your lecturers. This way you will get to meet others taking the same courses and avoid panic attacks later on! You can also ask for a university map and look around or be part of the organized campus tour.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to have fun, there will be plenty of field events, games, pub crawling, parties and movies organized to keep you occupied and in good spirits. A freshers ball or a disco party is usually held on the last night of the freshers week and this final event ends all the festivities of the previous week. However, it is not the end of entertainment or fun on the campus, it is just a way to start your academic year with a big bang. Freshers week is the only time where you’ll party round the clock continuously for seven days, so make the most of it and enjoy it while it lasts.
