Nightclubs in Cardiff
Cardiff City’s most notable feature is its Millennium Stadium, encompassing two nightclubs, a café, cinema and comedy club but this is not all that the Welsh Capital has to offer. At weekends the City streets fill with the young, old and all that’s in between in search of a great night out. On weekdays there is still a lot going on yet the events are more aimed towards Students with many of the venues offering discount nights.
St. Mary’s street is the centre for nightlife with its many clubs, restaurants, bars and shops and the rest of Cardiff’s attractions surround this entertainment hot spot. Cardiff Bay holds interest for families and those who prefer a quieter and more sophisticated night out than one in the City centre.
Then there is Greyfriars Road; offering a series of clubs, wine bars and pubs perfect for a few drinks before hitting St. Mary’s Street. Cathays is an area of Cardiff which may hold interest for students, with a wide variety of student orientated pubs and bars.
St Mary’s Street
This is Cardiff’s one-stop-shop for the biggest clubs and bustling bars such as Walkabout, Liquid, The Hard Rock Café and The Prince of Wales which is the largest Wetherspoon’s pub in the City. St Mary’s Street is right round the corner from the Cardiff Central train station and ‘Chippy Lane’; a pedestrianised street lined with takeaways and chip shops on both sides. Also just around the corner is the Millennium Stadium.
Cardiff Bay
Cardiff Bay lies south of the City centre and is a stunning area which has undergone a huge amount of recent regeneration to bring a modern and sophisticated atmosphere to its residents and visitors. While there are plenty of restaurants and cafés in this area Cardiff Bay’s most prominent venues include The Point, The Wharf pub, Evolution, and R Bar which is located within the famous Red Dragon centre along with an Odeon Cinema and Hollywood Bowl.
Greyfriars Road
Located just 2 minutes walk from St Mary’s Street, Greyfriars Road has a lot to offer in the way of trendy bars and a couple of nightclubs along with the huge Park Plaza hotel. This area is a great midway for those who are coming from the Cardiff Student Union on Park Place on their way into town, with bars such as Varsity, Tiger Tiger, Fat Cats, Slug & Lettuce and of course the staggering Oceana nightclub with seven different rooms and five bars.
Cathays
Primarily a student suburb, Cathays is a quieter part of town with its many pubs and bars dispersed throughout the streets. Several scenes of the popular film ‘Human Traffic’ were filmed in Cathays’ Gassy Jacks trendy and inviting pub and nearby watering holes include the Pen & Wig, The Woodville and The Gower. While Cathays is a good walk away from the centre of Cardiff, it’s certainly a great area to have a few quiet drinks to catch up with friends, or a lary one if you fancy it.
