Student Accommodation in Edinburgh

Moving out of home for the first time is daunting enough without the added worry that you will need to make friends. On campus accommodation at the University of Edinburgh provides a great solution to this problem as it’s a lot easier to make friends in halls in your first year than it is to do so in privately rented housing. With over 4500 rooms there’s bound to be a group of people that you get on with.

Accommodation at the University of Edinburgh is divided between three types, the first of these being catered halls known as ‘Pollock Halls of Residence’. Students living at Pollock halls reside in one of eight houses with around 230 other students in each one. Because these are catered halls, Pollock residents are entitled to breakfast and dinner during weekdays and brunch and dinner on the weekends. The average weekly rent price for this accommodation is £145, bringing the 38 week year to a total price of £5510.

Self catered halls are split between five buildings, housing around 570 students in total. This accommodation is different to catered accommodation in just one way: residents cook their own meals at Mylne’s court, David Horn and Kitchener houses or Roxburgh place.

The third accommodation option for students at the University of Edinburgh is the self-catered blocks of flats, which are currently home to 2,200 students in the surrounding areas of the University campus. Each block can house around 150 residents with approximately 5 rooms on each floor. Each floor has a communal kitchen, lounge and bathroom.  The average weekly rent price for self catered accommodation at Edinburgh University is £90, which is £3420 for the whole 38 week tenancy. The rent paid by students for their accommodation is inclusive or water, gas and electricity bills and students are exempt from council tax. The story is a little different with private renting, with some properties offering utilities included within the rent price and some not. Students in privately rented accommodation may also be required to show proof of being a student so that they do not have to pay council tax.

Edinburgh University student services offer potential or existing students a wealth of information and contact details for residential accommodation outside of the campus. This is the best way to find accommodation as they take important issues into consideration such as the distance from the university, who will be sharing a house with who and where the best houses/flats are for families or couples.
Of course there are differences in price depending on location, with the housing closer to the main campus (e.g. Marchmont and New Town) being higher that those further away (e.g. Haymarket and Leith Road).

Of course each and every student requires different features from their University accommodation and the University of Edinburgh is more than willing to help find the right place for its students. There is a residence at the University to suit anyone’s needs or desires whether they are disabled, with children, looking to make as many friends as possible or simply want to be as near to the University as possible.
