You can choose to stay at the Halls of residence if you have just moved to Liverpool, it’s a great option for undergraduates who have just moved out of their homes for the first time. The Halls of residence offer hassle lodgings and you can meet and make friends with people of your age group and it is definitely safer than living on your own.
There are two types of Halls, catered and self catered. For Freshers’, Carnatic and Greenbank sites are great choices as they offer two meals a day and are ably supported by wardens and tutors who live on the site. Both these sites are about 3 km away from the city centre but offer good sports facility on their sites and the nightlife around is rocking. The catered halls cost around £3200 + for 35 weeks. Rooms are available both as shared and ensuite.
The self catered Halls include Philharmoic Court which caters to families and mature students. Mulberry Court also a hot favourite is suitable for both mature as well as undergraduates. The costs include all the fuel bills and the internet charges. The charges are dependent on the sizes of the rooms and the contract length and start from £2700 onwards. You need to apply as early as Easter to secure your accommodation at the Halls of residence.
For shared housing and private flats you can contact the LSH which is affiliated to the students union to help provide cheap and comfortable housing to all the students. “Unite” accommodation is quite popular amongst the students looking for private accommodation, the Capital Gate right next to the Uni is a hot favourite. It has Double bed in studios which are ideal for couples wanting to live together. Apollo Court is close to the train station as well as the city centre and is a good option for those taking medical courses. Grand Central is located right next to the Lime Street station and is a two minute walk from all the happening, pubs, restaurants and the shopping areas. Prices start typically from £98 per week.
Area wise Dingle and Allerton are infested with students due to their closeness to all the three universities. The bus ride only takes 10-15 min to the Uni and the town ride is just about 10 minutes. Added to that is the availability of large houses that can accommodate 6-7 students together and has plenty of pubs and cinemas to keep you entertained through out the week. The rents start from £45 onwards. Bed-sits, apartments and shared houses are easily available in these areas.
Preferably look for properties that are listed with LSH and ensure that all your paper work has been done and that you understand the tenant clauses when looking for a private accommodation. Most of the landlords ask for a deposit so ensure that you clarify whether it is refundable or not in case you leave before the term is over. Do enjoy your independence but be responsible enough not to upset your neighbours with late night revelling and loud music.
