Universities are on thin ice this month as a recent report has revealed they are taking a less serious approach to cheaters in order to boost degree results.

According to Professor Geoffrey Alderman, lecturers are turning a blind eye to plagiarism due to the pressure created by league tables to award high marks. A recent survey backs this claim, with only 143 students expelled out of the 9,300 caught cheating!

Plagiarism Punishment

The report highlights that despite consistent warnings, students caught cheating rarely face severe consequences. More than 98% of offenders were allowed to continue studying.

Concerns that the application of penalties for student plagiarism is inconsistent across the higher education sector would appear to be upheld by the findings of this research,” says the report.

Almost eight in every hundred students have been caught cheating before.
